How to read Bitcoin Choppiness Index
What it measures
The Bitcoin Choppiness Index measures whether price has followed a directional path or repeatedly crossed its range. CHOP (14) compares the sum of 14 individual true ranges with the high-to-low range over the same 14 bars, scaled logarithmically. Its unit is index points.
How to read it
Below 38.2 is Trending; above 61.8 is Ranging. Readings between the guides, including both boundaries, are Intermediate. A low reading can accompany a rise or a fall. Daily uses 14 daily bars; Weekly uses 14 complete Monday-to-Sunday weeks, with its own calculation.
Limitations
This is a trailing description, not a prediction of direction or a promise of a breakout. Missing or unreliable prices leave gaps. The weekly view excludes the unfinished week. Price and indicator can use different market histories, so the separate price line provides context rather than an input to the indicator.

Bitcoin Choppiness Index, explained
What is the Bitcoin Choppiness Index?
The Bitcoin Choppiness Index measures whether price has followed a directional path or repeatedly crossed its range. CHOP (14) compares the sum of 14 individual true ranges with the high-to-low range over the same 14 bars, scaled logarithmically. Its unit is index points.
What do 38.2 and 61.8 mean?
Below 38.2 is Trending; above 61.8 is Ranging. Readings between the guides, including both boundaries, are Intermediate. A low reading can accompany a rise or a fall. Daily uses 14 daily bars; Weekly uses 14 complete Monday-to-Sunday weeks, with its own calculation.
Does low CHOP mean Bitcoin is bullish?
No. Low CHOP describes a more directional path, which can be upward or downward. High CHOP describes a more ranging path.
How do Daily and Weekly CHOP differ?
Daily CHOP (14) uses 14 closed UTC days and the previous close. Weekly CHOP (14) first aggregates complete Monday-to-Sunday weeks, then uses 14 weekly bars and the previous weekly close. It is not an average of daily CHOP.
Why are there gaps in the chart?
A reading is absent when its full input window contains missing or unreliable prices, or when the high-to-low range is zero. The line stops at those gaps.
How does automatic period selection work?
Ranges through 1Y open in Daily; longer ranges open in Weekly. Once you select a period manually, it stays selected while you change ranges during this page session. Shared and embedded links retain the chosen period and range.
